How to use the Recite Me accessibility toolbar

The Recite Me accessibility toolbar helps you customise the Norwich City Council website so it’s easier to read, listen to and use. You can change how the website looks and sounds without downloading anything. The toolbar works on desktop, tablet and mobile devices.

Opening the Recite Me toolbar 

To activate Recite Me:

  • Look for the “Read and translate” button at the top of any page on the Norwich City Council website.
  • Select the button to open the Recite Me accessibility toolbar.
  • The toolbar will appear at the top of your screen and is ready to use straight away. 

You can open the toolbar on any page and change the settings at any time.

Using the toolbar features

The toolbar gives you a range of tools to suit different needs, including reading, language support and visual adjustments.

Change text and layout

You can:

  • Increase or decrease text size
  • Change fonts, including easy‑to‑read and dyslexia‑friendly fonts
  • Adjust line spacing and letter spacing
  • Highlight links or headings
  • Switch to text‑only mode to remove images and distractions

Change colours and contrast

You can:

  • Switch to high‑contrast modes, dark mode or other colour themes
  • Change background and text colours
  • Reduce glare to make text easier to read

Listen to the content

You can:

  • Use the screen reader to read text aloud
  • Highlight specific text and press play to hear just that section
  • Choose different voices and adjust reading speed
  • Download selected text as an audio file (MP3) to listen to later

Translation and reading support

You can:

  • Translate pages into over 100 languages
  • More than 60 languages also include text‑to‑speech (spoken audio)
  • Languages include commonly used options such as Polish, Portuguese, Urdu, Arabic, Chinese, French and Spanish, as well as many others
  • Listen to translated text using text‑to‑speech in many languages
  • Use the built‑in dictionary to check the meaning of words
  • Turn on reading rulers, screen masks or text highlighting to help with focus and concentration 

Other helpful tools

You can:

  • Magnify parts of the page
  • Pause animations and hide images
  • Adjust the cursor size and colour
  • Reset the page back to its original settings at any time

Using the toolbar with a keyboard

You can use Recite Me without a mouse:

  • Use the Tab key to move between toolbar options
  • Press Enter to select or activate a tool 

Closing the toolbar

To close Recite Me:

  • Select the close (X) button on the toolbar, or
  • Refresh the page to return to the default website view
