Norwich City Council is moving forward with an environmentally focused project to enhance and protect Lion Wood, the city’s only ancient woodland. This pioneering initiative will improve access for walkers and cyclists, address surface water issues, and enhance biodiversity while preserving the woodland’s unique character.
Developed in collaboration with Norfolk County Council, the Environment Agency, and Anglian Water, the project will introduce Natural Flood Management (NFM) techniques to help address surface water flooding in the area. These nature-based solutions will also support the health of the woodland and improve the main path through Lion Wood, which forms part of the Norwich Pedalway network.
The project is being delivered through a combination of funding sources. The Greater Norwich Growth Board (GNGB) through the Infrastructure Investment Fund, will support the main construction work, Section 106 developer contributions will fund woodland management, and the Environment Agency’s Water Environment Improvement Fund (WEIF) will cover the design phase. Together, these funding streams ensure a joined-up and sustainable approach to delivery.
Norwich City Council is working with the Water Management Alliance as contractors to ensure the highest standards of environmental management and technical expertise throughout the project.
The plans for Lion Wood have been shaped by public feedback gathered through the Council’s Get Talking Norwich consultation earlier this year. Drop-in sessions held at the woodland gave residents the opportunity to share their views, with many highlighting the need to improve drainage, protect wildlife, and enhance the path for everyday use. This input has played a key role in setting the priorities for the work ahead.
Essential tree work will begin in November 2025. This phase will focus on removing invasive species and preserving and nurturing veteran trees, guided by the Lion Wood Management Plan. A citizen science initiative is currently in progress to record and monitor these important trees, encouraging community involvement in the care of the woodland. The main construction phase, including the installation of natural flood management features, is scheduled to begin in summer 2026.
Councillor Mike Stonard, Chair of the Greater Norwich Growth Board, said:
“This project is a great example of how the GNGB is helping to deliver sustainable infrastructure that benefits both people and the environment. By investing in nature-based solutions, we’re not only addressing long-standing flooding issues but also enhancing one of Norwich’s most important green spaces. It’s a collaborative effort that reflects our shared commitment to climate resilience, biodiversity, and community wellbeing.”
Councillor Emma Hampton, cabinet member for climate and environment at Norwich City Council, said:
“Lion Wood is one of Norwich’s most cherished natural spaces, and this project reflects our commitment to protecting it for future generations. By working with nature, we’re tackling flooding, boosting biodiversity, and improving access for everyone who enjoys the woodland.”
The Lion Wood Conservation Group, a local volunteer-led organisation dedicated to preserving and enhancing the ecological value of Lion Wood, has been actively involved in shaping the woodland management aspects of the project. Their work includes habitat monitoring, community engagement, and supporting citizen science initiatives.
A spokesperson for the group said:
“We’re delighted to see this project moving forward with such a strong focus on nature-based solutions. Lion Wood is a vital green space for both wildlife and the local community, and we’re proud to be working alongside the council to help protect its unique character. The planned tree work and flood management measures will make a real difference, and we look forward to continuing our role in monitoring and caring for this special woodland.”
