Two carparks along Edward Street are set for closure as the redevelopment of Anglia Square gathers pace.
The first car park, RCP Parking - Edward Street Petrol, will close from 23:59 hours, on Tuesday, 13 January while the second car park, RCP Parking – Broadside Warehouse, is set to close from 23:59 hours on Sunday 1 March.
Both carparks need to close due to preparatory works for demolition, remediation and building of new homes.
Councillor Carli Harper, cabinet member finance and major project, said: “We do understand this may cause inconvenience to motorists, residents and businesses, however, this needs to be done in order for us to deliver on our commitment to redevelop Anglia Square.
“This council has grasped the nettle and will be driving through the regeneration of the Anglia Square which has been long stalled for many years.
“Along with our partners, Aviva Capital Partners, we will deliver 1,100 homes, which will be at least 50 percent affordable in the first two phases, plus retail, leisure and community spaces which will have a massive economic and social benefit for all the community.”
Motorists are advised to use Colegate and Monastery Court car parks and the council is expecting to open a revamped car park at St Crispin’s in the coming weeks.
As part of the on-going demolition works there will be road closures to parts of Edward Street and Magdalen Street and bus diversions next month. Further details and updates will be communicated by the council’s news website and public notices from the Highways Authority.
Cllr Harper said: “We do understand demolition and building works will have an impact on local traders and the community, which is why we created the new box park, St Saviours Yard, which is already up and running and will, we believe, make Magdalen Street a really buzzing part of the city.”
