If you give up your plot or the council ends your tenancy, you’ll have 28 days to clear your allotment. During this time, you're still responsible for the plot.
What you need to do
- Take your belongings - remove all tools, plants, and materials you want to keep. After 28 days, anything left behind becomes council property.
- Clear the plot - remove all waste, including carpets, metal, wood, and broken structures. If you leave rubbish, the council may charge you for clearing it.
- Dispose of waste properly - you can only burn dry organic waste (like twigs or untreated wood) between 1 October and 31 March. Burning anything else is not allowed and may lead to legal action.
After the 28 days, your tenancy ends and the plot will be re-let. You won’t be allowed back on the plot, but you can still visit the site if you're helping another tenant.
Key rules
- You don’t need to return your key if you started your tenancy after 1 March 2014.
- Remove any structures you built.
- Any remaining items, including animals, may be removed by the council.
- If the plot is left in poor condition, you may be charged for the cost of putting it right.
